Napoli defeated Salernitana 2-0 in Serie A thanks to the goals scored by Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Victor Osimhen.
After a tough 8-2 loss to Atalanta last Sunday, Salernitana hosted Serie A leader Napoli at Stadio Arechi on Saturday.
The match began in a calm manner with Napoli having a significant advantage in ball possession.
Salernitana’s captain Norbert Gyomber made a return after his injury. However, the match was over for him in the 16th minute after having suffered another injury. Matteo Lovato replaced him in the defensive line.
Victor Osimhen had a big opportunity to put Napoli in the lead during the corner kick in the 20th minute, but Guillermo Ochoa made a save. Salernitana responded with Krzysztof Piątek’s attempt, but Alex Meret did not allow the Pole to score.
Osimhen got the ball inside Salernitana’s penalty box in the 34th minute and made a successful strike from an acute angle. However, the goal was disallowed as the Napoli striker had been offside.
Napoli got to the lead in the final moments of the first half. The ball hit the crossbar and went into Ochoa’s net after Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s shot.
Napoli started the second half the same manner it ended the first half – with a goal. Osimhen got the ball after it had hit the post after Eljif Elmas’ shot and scored.
Piątek could have returned Salernitana to the game in the final minutes. He made a close-range shot. Meret deflected the ball, and it subsequently hit the post.
Napoli won the match and had 50 points in the tally at the halfway point of the season. Meanwhile, Salernitana’s streak without wins in the championship continued.
