Friday’s match between Aston Villa and Leeds United at Villa Park began Premier League’s matchday 20.

Aston Villa took an early lead in the match. A counterattack after Leeds’ corner kick in the 3rd minute resulted in Leon Bailey’s goal. Boubacar Kamara made an assist.

However, the home team had to substitute left-back Lucas Digne after Rodrigo had hit him in the face with his knee. Alex Moreno, who had joined the team earlier this week, made his Aston Villa debut in the 10th minute.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez lost the ball after Tyrone Mings’ pass, but the Leeds players did not capitalize on the Argentinian’s mistake.

Leeds had their first real opportunity to score in the 23rd minute. Rodrigo got the pass from Brenden Aaronson during the free kick, but the ball was picked up by Martinez. The two players collided which forced the goalkeeper to fumble the ball. Jack Harrison made a shot but hit the post.

Aston Villa had to make another substitution in the first half. Ollie Watkins had to leave the pitch due to an injury. Danny Ings substituted him.

At the end of the first half, Rodrigo went one-on-one with Martinez and passed through the goalkeeper. However, Moreno deflected the ball which led to Leeds’ corner kick.

Leeds had another chance to equalize several minutes ago, but Martinez made an impressive save after Harrison had shot in almost an empty net. Shortly after, Rodrigo managed to put the ball in the Aston Villa net, but the goal was disallowed due to an offside.

Despite the opportunities Leeds had, Aston Villa kept the lead entering halftime.

Aston Villa and Leeds exchanged opportunities at the start of the second half. Martinez made another save in the 53rd minute after Wilfried Gnonto’s strike.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier deflected the ball in front of himself after Bailey’s shot. Emiliano Buendia picked up the ball and scored the goal with a header. It was disallowed at first, but eventually, referee Michael Oliver changed the decision.

Moreno had a chance of making the score 3-0, but the ball hit the outer side of the net after his attempt. Moments later, Ings went one-on-one with Meslier, but the latter made a save.

Patrick Bamford scored for Leeds in the 83rd minute, adding intrigue to the final minutes of the game.

Leeds did not manage to equalize at the end of the match which meant that Aston Villa took the three points at home.
