Napoli-striker Victor Osimhen might be a bit of a gamble with his injury record, but Serie A’s top scorer is ready for his big-money move. Osimhen, who now shares a record with George Weah, can take a team by his hand against any opponent.
Osimhen joined Napoli from the French side Lille for an astounding 75 million euros, a sum never paid before by the Partenopei. The Nigerian hit the ground running the south of Italy, with 10 goals and 3 assists in 24 appearances in his first season. Napoli might have put down a big fee, but they knew they had found their striker for years to come.
In his second season, Osimhen upped the ante, as he managed more goals and assists. Napoli was in the title race for a while that year but couldn’t stay in the track of the Milanese giants. They ended up third, Osimhen’s best finish in Serie A.
It is the current season that really puts Osimhen amongst Europe’s elite. He’s been incredibly important for Napoli’s current Scudetto charge. The Azzurri are in first place in Serie A, somewhere they wouldn’t have been without Osimhen’s goals and performances. He already hit 10 goals (first in the league to do so) and assisted twice in only 13 league games. That makes him the second African striker in history to find the net 10 times in 3 different Serie A seasons, leveling Ballon d’Or winner George Weah.
Crucial when needed
Osimhen is leading the Capocannoniere race, but he is so much more than just goals. The 24-year-old has qualities only a few strikers possess. His work rate is incredible, he can beat his man, and he is explosive, strong, an aerial threat: what’s not to like? This season has shown that Osimhen really matured. Napoli had a tough time against Roma in the capital, but Osimhen forced Smalling off the ball and smashed in a late goal from a difficult angle.
When the Partenopei faced Atalanta in Bergamo, Osimhen was the game-changer too. Ademola Lookman had put the home side ahead, but Osimhen quickly canceled out his fellow Nigerian’s goal with a great header. Then, Osimhen beat Demiral on the right side of the pitch before assisting Elmas’ 1-2. That would also be the final score. Both Roma and Atalanta have been playing quite defensively this season, so Osimhen has can do it with little space too.
Although Osimhen, who also has Champions League experience, ticks off all the boxes, he’s also injury-prone, something clubs obviously don’t like. He has missed 43 matches since coming to Italy, but it should be noted that only 6 of those are from this season. Osimhen is also still playing with a facemask, something that might just be down to Neapolitan superstition. He pulls the mask off occasionally whilst celebrating too.
Injuries or not, Osimhen’s performances don’t go unnoticed. Manchester United is a club that the Nigerian always gets linked to, and the Red Devils are on the lookout for a striker, so this summer might be the perfect time to strengthen their attack with him. Paris Saint Germain is another team that is supposedly interested in Osimhen’s services. It’s no surprise that Europe’s biggest teams are after one of the most complete strikers around. Wherever Osimhen ends up, there are no doubts about whether he will perform if he’s ready.
