FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes that Formula 1 cannot have only one race director.
Following Michael Masi’s departure from the role of the F1 race director, the approach to officiating was changed for the 2022 season. Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas were sharing the duties in 2022 until the United States GP when the former became the sole race director.
It was reported earlier that Wittich will remain in the position of the F1 race director this year. However, Ben Sulayem believes that F1 needs more than one person for that role.
“There is a process now, and I have a team who is going through a proper process and training for stewarding, and for race directors,” he said at the 2023 Dakar Rally.
“You cannot just have one race director and rely on them. I see that we should prepare the second role. We cannot rely in the biggest discipline that we have, or any other discipline.
“What if something happened? If we are going to sustain motorsport, we have to be ready with training.”
