Frederic Vasseur believes that the reaction to the violations of the budget cap should be quicker and stricter in the future.
The budget cap was introduced to Formula 1 in the 2021 season. It became a highly discussed topic several months ago when it was confirmed that both Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin violated the regulations in 2021.
Later on, both teams signed Accepted Breach Agreements which implied punishments depending on the extent of violations.
Aston Martin was given a $450k fine for a procedural violation, while Red Bull was handed a $7m fine and a 10% reduction of aerodynamic testing time for 12 months for a procedural violation and minor overspending.
Vasseur, who was recently appointed as Ferrari team principal, thinks that the reaction to breaches should be improved.
“Where we have to work today, firstly, it was far too long,” Vasseur told Motorsport.com ahead of his move to Ferrari.
“We need to find a way to have a red light before, or to be able to take action much earlier.
“And we have to probably be a bit more strict on the decision. Okay, perhaps this was the first one, but from now we have to forget about minor and major. Because for me, two or three million, it’s not minor, it’s mega, for development.
“I think we have to be much more strict and much more quick on the action.”
