Pierre Gasly will join Alpine in 2023. The Frenchman believes it was the right choice at the right moment and feels the team has “enormous potential”.
Gasly finished his journey with AlphaTauri and Red Bull, describing his switch to Alpine as a “natural step”.
“I had a contract for 2023. The possibilities of leaving seemed limited, but you can talk and find out what is possible. When I saw that Helmut was open to having talks, I noticed that the situation was changing.
“For me, it’s a major change in my career, joining Alpine was a natural step,” he said.
Gasly also added that out of all the possibilities, joining Alpine was the best one.
“This is where I want to be, where I want to spend my future. It’s the right time for me as a driver. With the experience of the last few years, it’s time to take the next step, it’s an incredible story to write together.
“If we look at the possibilities, there were no more attractive seats for 2023, when Alonso decided to leave Alpine and Piastri wanted to go to McLaren, it was the most attractive seat in the paddock.”
In conclusion, the Frenchman also wanted to highlight the incredible steps forward made by the team, adding that he sees great potential in the car.
“If you look at the development of the team in recent years, it’s quite impressive how they are progressing,” he said.
“Fernando was on the front row of the grid in Canada. They fight at the top of the midfield and are consistent with both cars.
“The team is developing the car very well, every time they bring in new parts they progress. They have a very good correlation between the factory and the track, I see enormous potential.”
