Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the porpoising problems with their car in 2022 were “breaking” their engine.
The Silver Arrows had a rough start to the season, as they were heavily affected by the introduction of new technical regulations for the year. The team suffered the most with porpoising, which they managed to improve throughout the season, though both its drivers were still complaining about the strong shaking of the car in the closing races.
Speaking in a review video, Wolff said the bouncing of the car was breaking the engine.
“We came out at the beginning of the season with some wobbles on the power unit, we didn’t like certain aspects of the deployment of the drivability of the power unit,” he said.
“Whilst in the frozen environment, you and your team were able to really add on performance, cope with the difficult environment of a bouncing car that was breaking the engine.
“Still, we were super reliable, and the engine was performing very well towards the middle of the season and the end.”
