Logan Sargeant believes that he would not move up to Formula 1 if he had won the Formula 3 title in 2020.
Sargeant is one of the three rookies on the F1 grid in 2023. However, the F1 promotion was not imminent for the American driver several years ago.
Sargeant entered the final race of the 2020 Formula 3 season as one of the title contenders – he was equal on points with Oscar Piastri. Sargeant was involved in an accident on the opening lap of race 2 at Mugello and was forced to retire. As a result, Sargeant ended the season in 3rd place, 4 points behind Piastri who had won the title.
Sargeant stayed in F3 for another year and drove for Charouz Racing System. Later in the season, he joined the Williams Academy.
In 2022, Sargeant moved up to Formula 2. The 21-year-old won 2 races, had 4 podium finishes, and took 2 pole positions at Carlin. He finished 4th in the championship and scored enough points to be granted a superlicense and get a Williams seat for 2023.
”It was a weird incident, honestly. I can’t even really tell you exactly what happened. I never watched it again; I didn’t want to see it again,” Sargeant commented about the Mugello accident on the Feeder Series Podcast.
”I guess everything happens for a reason because I probably wouldn’t have been here if I won that championship.”
