The five penalties Argentina took at 2022 World Cup

The Argentina national team took five penalties throughout the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This is the most penalty kicks a team was awarded at any World Cup. Let’s take a look at how each of them ended for Albiceleste.

1. Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia – Group Stage

What happened: Leandro Paredes was tackled by Saudi Arabia’s Saud Abdulhamid at a corner.

Outcome: Lionel Messi scored the goal in the 10th minute. However, the match resulted in a shocking upset – a 2:1 win for Saudi Arabia.

2. Poland vs. Argentina – Group Stage

What happened: Argentina was awarded a penalty kick after Wojciech Szczęsny fouled on Messi.

Outcome: Szczęsny saved Messi’s shot in the 39th minute. Despite this, Argentina won the match 2:0 and advanced to the round of 16.

3. The Netherlands vs. Argentina – Quarterfinals

What happened: Denzel Dumfries tacked Marcos Acuña but fouled in the penalty box, which resulted in a penalty kick.

Outcome: Messi scored a goal in the 73rd minute to double Argentina’s advantage. However, the Netherlands scored twice to send the game into extra time. Argentina won the match 4:3 on penalties.

4. Argentina vs. Croatia – Semifinals

What happened: Julián Álvarez went one-on-one against Dominik Livaković in the 32nd minute which ended in a foul committed by Croatia’s goalkeeper.

Outcome: Messi converted the penalty kick into goal two minutes later. It was the first of three goals scored by Argentina that night.

5. Argentina vs. France – Final

What happened: Ángel Di María fell on the ground after having been fouled against by Ousmane Dembélé.

Outcome: Messi sent the ball into the net in the 23rd minute.
