Dutch player Wout Weghorst called Argentine Lionel Messi’s attitude “really disappointing” following their quarter-final match of the FIFA World Cup.
Argentina eliminated the Netherlands from the 2022 FIFA World Cup in a heated match that saw many disputes between both teams. On top of that, team coach Louis van Gaal had angered the Argentine players by saying the Dutch team would take redemption from 2014 when they lost to the South American team by penalties.
After the match and in talks with Argentine media, Lionel Messi called Weghorst a “bobo,” which means “fool” in Spanish.
“What are you looking at, fool? What are you looking at? Keep walking, fool,” Messi was heard saying.
After this incident, Weghorst said he was disappointed at Messi’s attitude, stating he has a lot of respect for the Argentine.
“I wanted to shake his hand after the game, I have a lot of respect for him as a football player,” Weghorst said.
“But he threw my hand to the side and didn’t want to talk to me. My Spanish is not very good but he said disrespectful words to me, and that disappoints me.
“Really disappointing,” he concluded.

I’ll give it to Weghorst here. The match was hot before he stepped on the pitch and it even looks like he was brought in as a response to Paredes being brought on. A brawler to match a brawler. But with that considered, he actually hit the back of the net more than Messi himself, an outstanding performance. Barcelona Messi would have probably wanted to swap shirts with him. Argentina Messi is possessed by the phantom spirit of Maradona however, which explains the late development of Messi’s villain arc 😛
