George Russell believes that Mercedes’ performance at the Abu Dhabi GP was a “reality check” for them.

After a 1-2 finish in Sao Paulo, Mercedes had a more difficult weekend in Abu Dhabi. Lewis Hamilton and Russell started last Sunday’s race in 5th and 6th place respectively. Russell crossed the finish line in P5, while Hamilton was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue.

“I think it’s a bit of a reality check for all of us,”¬†Russell said.

“And very much needed because we still recognize that we’ve got a lot to do if we want to fight with Red Bull next season.

“Clearly we have a car with a huge amount of potential, but unfortunately that performance window is far too narrow.

“And those performance swings we’ve seen from the highs of Budapest, Brazil, Mexico, Singapore comparing to the likes of here, Monza, Spa are just far too vast.”
