Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is delighted with their strategy calls at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The Abu Dhabi GP was an important race for Ferrari as the Maranello-based outfit sought to secure 2nd place in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship.
Charles Leclerc started the race behind Sergio Perez but crossed the finish line ahead of his opponent after having been on the one-stop strategy. This result allowed the Monegasque to end the season in P2 in the standings. Furthermore, Ferrari kept 2nd place in the Constructors’ Championship.
Binotto was pleased with the team’s approach to strategy amid the mistakes made earlier in the season.
“We were flexible with both drivers because we knew it would have been somewhere in between the one or the two [stop strategy],” he said.
“Charles had a bit more margin on the cars behind and could save more of the tires which gave him the benefit to go for the one-stop.
“It was great to see the team being flexible in choosing one driver [to go on the one-stop] and the second [on a two] to optimize the race results.
“The dummy call on the Red Bull was fantastic.
“Certainly we did a proper job, and overall, we made it right, so I’m happy for the team.
“When Ferrari has been making mistakes, there is always a lot of criticism, but I know that these guys can do very well.”
