Charles Leclerc admitted that he feels “really happy” after having finished second in the Drivers’ Championship.
Ahead of Sunday’s race at the Yas Marina Circuit, Leclerc and Sergio Perez had 290 points each. The Monegasque began the race in P3, while his opponent was right ahead on the grid.
Perez used a two-stop strategy, while Leclerc pitted once. As a result, the latter’s strategy paid off. Leclerc crossed the finish line in P2 and Perez was 3rd. This result allowed the Ferrari driver to secure 2nd place in the Drivers’ Championship.
“I was 110% from the first to the last lap. I knew that the only chance for us to beat Checo was with a different strategy and playing with the tire management. We managed to make the one-stop work, so [I am] really happy,” Leclerc said after the race.
“I really hope next year we can do a step forward, considering where we were last year it’s a big step forward. We improved in terms of strategy towards the end of the season. We need to work on race pace because Sunday we seem to struggle a little bit more.”
