Ayumu Iwasa wins the final race of the 2022 Formula 2 season after a breathtaking battle with Felipe Drugovich.

Roy Nissany briefly got ahead of Ayumu Iwasa ahead of turn 1, but the Japanese driver managed to keep the lead in the end. Felipe Drugovich was in P3.

The Virtual Safety Car was deployed on lap 2 as Ralph Boschung stopped at turn 9 a lap before following a spin triggered by a collision. Racing action was resumed on lap 3. Theo Pourchaire overtook Dennis Hauger for P4 at the restart.

Drugovich overtook Nissany and moved up to P2 on lap 7. Later on, Pourchaire passed the DAMS driver but went wide at turn 9 and lost the position.

Liam Lawson was told through team radio to do the opposite of Dennis Hauger in terms of making a pit stop. However, both drivers went to the pits, and Lawson got ahead of his opponent at the pit lane.

Iwasa and Pourchaire made their mandatory pit stops on lap 9. The ART GP driver had to fight Hauger but went off the track at turns 6-7 chicane.

Drugovich pitted the following lap. The 2022 Formula 2 champion rejoined the track between Iwasa and Lawson.

Drugovich almost hit the rear of Iwasa’s car while braking at turn 6. Lawson caught the MP Motorsport driver but was unable to make a pass.

Jack Doohan, who began the race on the harder tire compound, was in the lead halfway through. He was followed by Marcus Armstrong and Richard Verschoor.

Hauger was defending his position from Pourchaire, while Nissany was holding off Logan Sargeant who was chasing the F1 seat at Williams. Pourchaire finally got ahead of Hauger for the virtual P4 on lap 22 after the PREMA Racing driver had gone wide at turn 9.

Doohan pitted after 25 laps of racing. The Australian got fresh Soft tires for the closing stages of the race. Iwasa returned to the race lead.

Doohan’s race ended in a dramatic way as one of his wheels came off the car after he had returned to the track. The Virtual Safety Car was deployed again to allow the marshals to remove the wheel.

Less than a second separated Iwasa and Drugovich with 5 laps to go. Behind them, Hauger got ahead of Pourchaire ahead. Moments later, the Frenchman began going slowly and retired from the race.

Drugovich tried to pass Iwasa at turn 9 on lap 31, but the attempt was not successful. The Virtual Safety Car was back on the penultimate lap of the race as Olli Caldwell stopped at turn 13. Shortly after, it ended, and Drugovich continued putting pressure on the race leader.

Drugovich made another attempt at turn 9 on the final lap, but Iwasa managed to stay in front and won the race. Lawson completed the podium. Drugovich’s brought MP Motorsport the 2022 Teams’ title.
