Ayumu Iwasa leads the DAMS 1-2 in the Formula 2 qualifying in Abu Dhabi.
The final qualifying session of the 2022 Formula 2 season took place at the Yas Marina Circuit on Friday afternoon.
All drivers left the pit lane to set their first flying laps as soon as the session started. The session was suspended after Marino Sato had spun and stopped at turn 13.
Jack Doohan was at the top of the standings at that moment. He was followed by Theo Pourchaire and Juri Vips.
Doohan remained in the provisional pole position after the session was resumed.
Drivers left the pit lane for their final flying lap attempts with 11 minutes to go. Felipe Drugovich beat Doohan’s lap time and took over the lead. Moments later, Pourchaire took over the provisional pole.
Doohan hit the wall at the exit of turn 14 with his right rear tire. The car did not suffer significant damage, and the Virtuosi Racing driver kept going.
Roy Nissany got ahead of Pourchaire. The DAMS driver was not in P1 for long as his teammate Ayumu Iwasa went quicker.
Meanwhile, Zane Maloney spun and stopped at turn 9. The session was red-flagged. With 28 seconds left on the clock, it was not resumed.
Iwasa took the pole position for the Feature Race. Nissany was second, and Pourchaire completed the top 3. Richard Verschoor ended the session in 10th place which meant that he took the pole position for the Sprint Race.
