Alpine has agreed to end Oscar Piastri’s contract early amid his McLaren switch.
Piastri was expected to replace Fernando Alonso at Alpine in the 2023 F1 season, but the Australian denied it and decided to join McLaren.
Piastri is currently under Alpine’s contract as a reserve driver, and the Enstone-based outfit was not showing any intentions of allowing the 21-year-old to work with McLaren early.
However, Piastri recently tested the MCL35M car at Paul Ricard for two days. Later on, Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer confirmed that they had reached an agreement to let Piastri go after the Abu Dhabi GP.
“There was a negotiation on an agreement as to how to part ways,” he told Motorsport.com.
“We’re drawing a line under it. Once this season ends, he’s free to go and do whatever he wants to do.”
