Fernando Alonso thinks that the accident he had with Lance Stroll at the United States GP was a racing incident.
Alonso had a battle with Stroll for 7th place on lap 22 of the US GP. The Alpine driver turned left to make a pass, while his opponent also moved which resulted in a collision.
Stroll’s car received terminal damage, and the Canadian was not able to continue the race. Alonso’s car went airborne and was damaged, but he managed to continue the race and crossed the finish line in 7th place.
However, the Spaniard was given a 30-second time penalty because of a technical infringement of his car. Meanwhile, Stroll was given a 3-place grid penalty for the Mexico City GP.
“Honestly, when you see the thing on the TV, I think it’s a racing incident, to be honest,” Alonso commented on the crash.
“We move basically at the same time to the left, and that was the trigger of everything. So I think it was a very unfortunate moment for everyone.”
When asked whether he thought Stroll had moved too late, Alonso said: “Sure, but when you are at 300 [km/h], those movements, you know, one tenth of a second, you move 200 meters.
“If it’s in slow motion and you move it frame by frame, he will move a little bit later than me. If you go normal speed, you see both cars more or less at the same time.
“That’s why after looking on TV, I think there’s nothing you can do differently.”
