Reports have emerged that Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin exceeded the budget cap for the 2021 Formula 1 season.
The budget cap was introduced to F1 in order to reduce the teams’ costs and facilitate closer competition. In 2021, the limit was at the level of $145m.
The FIA are set to release the information on how the teams complied with the rules last year. Both Auto Motor und Sport and Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Red Bull and Aston Martin had failed to stay within the limit.
If the Milton Keynes-based outfit violated the budget cap, it would raise questions for Mercedes and Ferrari because of the controversial ending to the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP and Red Bull’s performance in 2022.
At the same time, the FIA do not have a clear list of penalties for budget cap violations, so it is unclear what punishment Red Bull and Aston Martin will be handed in the event of a breach.
