Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner admitted that he regrets not signing Oscar Piastri to their young driver program.

Piastri had an impressive career in junior series. He won titles in Formula Renault Eurocup, Formula 3, and Formula 2 in his rookie seasons.

The Australian joined the Alpine Academy in 2020 and was expected to replace Fernando Alonso in the F1 team in 2023. However, Piastri decided to join McLaren.

Horner revealed that he regrets not signing Piastri to the Red Bull Junior Team several years ago.

“He drove for the Arden team in Formula 4 and Formula Renault and was obviously a significant talent,” he said on the Beyond The Grid podcast.

“There was an opportunity for Red Bull to look at him at the time, and we didn’t take up that option which is something that I regret. But what he went on to achieve is phenomenal, in Formula 3 and Formula 2.”

Horner also commented on the contract dispute between McLaren and Alpine regarding Piastri’s contract.

“Now if he’d have been a driver here, there is no way that he wouldn’t have been under lock and key for a period in time. As I say, I wasn’t a party, it’s difficult to judge what was promised or reneged on or so on.

“But certainly, it was unexpected, probably from several areas.”
