Zane Maloney is the first repeat Feature Race polesitter in F3 in 2022 after having set the fastest lap time in qualifying.
Victor Martins, who is in the championship fight, got to the top of the standings in the early stages of qualifying. He was followed by Franco Colapinto and Zane Maloney.
Maloney had a chance of beating Martins’ lap time. The Trident driver was the quickest in sector 1 but lost time in sectors 2 and 3.
Francesco Pizzi had to abort his flying lap after having encountered traffic. He was frustrated with that on team radio.
Caio Collet got to P2, while Martins improved his lap time to stay in front. Moments later, Maloney went to provisional pole, having been almost three-tenths of a second quicker than Martins. Meanwhile, championship leader Isack Hadjar was in P20.
After a brief break, drivers returned to the race track with less than 6 minutes to go in the session.
Jak Crawford got to P3, while Hadjar moved up to 6th place. However, William Alatalo hit the barriers at turn 3 after that. The red flags were out and the session was not restarted.
Maloney took the pole position for the Feature Race on Sunday. Martins was 2nd, and Crawford completed the top 3.
Juan Manuel Correa finished qualifying 12th and will start Saturday’s Sprint Race from pole position.
