Max Verstappen showed a masterclass drive to win the Belgian Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso had a good getaway that allowed him to get to P2. Moments later, the Spaniard had a collision with Lewis Hamilton who was trying to get ahead at Les Combes.
Hamilton was told to stop the car. The race was over for the Mercedes driver. The stewards decided not to take any action following the accident.
Sainz was leading after the opening lap. Sergio Perez and George Russell were following him in the top 3.
Nicholas Latifi, Valtteri Bottas, and Esteban Ocon had an incident. The Alfa Romeo driver was stuck in gravel which forced race control to bring out the Safety Car.
Charles Leclerc reported smoke at the front of his car. The Monegasque went to the pits for fresh tires. A visor tear-off was stuck in his brake duct and caused an issue.
Sainz remained in front at the restart. Alonso tried to overtake Russell for P3 at Les Combes, but the attempt was not successful. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen was in P6 on lap 6. The Dutchman got to the top 3 two laps later.
Both Sainz and Verstappen reported high degradation of Soft tires. The Ferrari driver switched to Medium tires after 11 laps. Verstappen overtook Perez and got to the lead.
Perez had his pit stop earlier than Verstappen despite having harder tires. The Mexican rejoined the track right in front of Leclerc. The Monegasque had at attempt to overtake Perez at Les Combes but stayed behind. Leclerc was eventually overtaken by Russell.
Verstappen pitted a lap later. He returned to the track behind Sainz but was closing the gap. The Dutchman took the lead back on lap 18. Sainz dropped down to P3 after Perez’s overtake on lap 21.
Ferrari had a double-stack pit stop on lap 26. Sainz got Hard tires, and Leclerc was on Mediums.
Verstappen got Medium tires for his last stint after 30 laps of racing. The Dutchman was 8.5 seconds ahead of Perez after he had rejoined the track.
Esteban Ocon made a double overtake on Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly at Les Combes. As a result, the Alpine driver moved up to P7.
Leclerc had another pit stop on the penultimate lap. He got Soft tires in an attempt to set the fastest lap of the race. However, he was overtaken by Fernando Alonso at the Kemmel Straight.
Leclerc recovered the position but did not set the fastest lap. Furthermore, he was given a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane and was demoted to P6.
Verstappen cruised to his 9th win of the season. Perez crossed the finish line in P2. Sainz completed the top 3.
