Oliver Bearman wins the opening Formula 3 race of the weekend at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
Polesitter Zak O’Sullivan remained in front at the start, but Juan Manuel Correa got momentarily ahead of him at Les Combes. The leaders had a contact that left O’Sullivan with a damaged front wing and Correa with a puncture. Behind them, Franco Colapinto was spun.
Brad Benavides took over the lead with Oliver Bearman and Jonny Edgar behind. Bearman overtook Benavides for the lead on lap 2.
Christian Mansell went off the track and hit the barrier at Les Combes following a collision with Rafael Villagomez. The Safety Car was deployed.
Edgar was given a five-second penalty for causing the collision with Colapinto on lap 1. Meanwhile, Villagomez was given a ten-second time penalty for the incident with Mansell.
The race was restarted on lap 6 of 15. Bearman remained in the lead, and Edgar passed Benavides for P2.
The Safety Car was back on the race track on the next lap after an accident involving Oliver Goethe and Zane Maloney. The latter went upside-down. Both drivers left their cars and walked away from the scene of the accident. The race was suspended eventually.
Victor Martins was given a drive-through penalty for a jumpstart. O’Sullivan was another driver with a time penalty. The Carlin driver was penalized for causing a collision.
After the barrier was repaired, drivers returned to the race track. The race restarted with a rolling start. Bearman made a gap from Edgar that allowed him to keep the lead. William Alatalo went wide at La Source and lost several positions.
Alexander Smolyar overtook Benavides for P3. The Carlin driver was also passed by Roman Stanek. Reece Ushijima tried to overtake Benavides at the Bus Stop chicane. However, he had to defend from David Vidales who got ahead at La Source. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver dropped down to P16.
Bearman was out of reach for his opponents and won his maiden F3 race. Edgar crossed the finish line second but was demoted to P4 because of the time penalty. Stanek and Smolyar completed the podium.
