Sainz: Ferrari’s pace issues in Hungary “a bit of a surprise”

Carlos Sainz believes that Ferrari need to analyze why they did not manage to match Red Bull and Mercedes in cool conditions at the Hungarian GP.

Ferrari seemed to be clear favorites at the start of the race weekend in Budapest as hot weather was beneficial for the Maranello-based outfit.

However, Ferrari lost their advantage when temperatures got lower. Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished qualifying 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Monegasque was leading the race at one point but finished it in 6th place after a switch to the Hard tires. Sainz also struggled and crossed the finish line in P4.

“It was definitely a bit of a surprise for us because we were coming from dominating on Friday,” Sainz commented on the matter.

“We had mega pace on a hot track. We were clear on pace to everyone else.

“All of a sudden, [Max] Verstappen and [Lewis] Hamilton were flying [in the race], and we didn’t have the pace of Verstappen and Hamilton.

“We need to be honest with ourselves and analyze why, in these conditions, our car was not working very well, and we have to be better next time.”

Nevertheless, Sainz thinks that Ferrari will be stronger after analyzing their issues.

“I think [in the race] clearly there was something on the conditions that didn’t help us.

“Already [on Saturday] we took a step backwards [from Friday] and we were not on pole, and [in the race] we took another step backwards, so I think there was something [wrong] on the car.

“We need to regroup, analyze what we can do better in these conditions, and I’m sure we will come back strong.”
