George Russell surprised everyone -including himself- after claiming Pole position for tomorrow’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver dethroned the Ferrari drivers from their 1-2 positions right at the end of the qualifying session, claiming Pole. Speaking after the end, he said he was “over the moon” with his result.
“I’m over the moon, absolutely buzzing,” he said. “Yesterday was probably the worst of the season, and everyone last night worked so hard.
“We didn’t know what direction to go in. Turn 1 and 2 were mega. The lap time kept coming, it was an incredible feeling to see P1.
“We need to look into it and understand where that [the performance] came from today. There are a few ideas we have.”
However, despite his good result in Qualifying, Russell knows tomorrow’s Grand Prix is the main job.
“There are no points for qualifying,” he said. “We had good race pace, but the Ferraris looked very fast on Friday. We’ll be going for it.”
