Carlos Sainz has topped the timesheets of the opening free practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Formula 1’s race weekend in Hungary commenced with FP1 on Friday afternoon. The session was crucial given wet weather is expected on Saturday.
Valtteri Bottas missed the session as Robert Kubica was replacing him at Alfa Romeo for the second week in a row.
Aston Martin teammates Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel were the first drivers to get to the race track to test a revised rear wing which caught a lot of attention.
Lando Norris had aero rakes installed on his car so that McLaren could collect necessary data. Vettel had the same device on his car as well.
George Russell began the session on Hard tires. After completing the stint, he switched to Softs. He reported that his car was bottoming around turn 1, but managed to get to provisional P2. He ended FP1 in 5th place.
Traffic is a common concern at the Hungaroring. Mick Schumacher was not happy with Charles Leclerc staying on the racing line in front of him. Sergio Perez’s flying lap was also affected by one of the Haas cars in front.
Carlos Sainz set the quickest lap time of the session. Max Verstappen was second, while Leclerc completed the top 3.
