George Russell does not think that Mercedes will manage to be quicker than Red Bull Racing and Ferrari in the 2022 season.
After a difficult start to the season, Mercedes gained momentum thanks to the car upgrades. The Silver Arrows finished on podium in 5 latest races. Furthermore, both drivers were in the top 3 in France a week ago.
Russell acknowledges that Mercedes got closer to the leaders, but admits that they are still too far.
“We’re definitely closing that gap, there’s no doubt, but the four cars ahead of us certainly have the pace advantage. There’s no doubts about that. But I think, as a team, we’re slowly closing the gap,” he said.
At the same time, the Briton does not think that Mercedes will make their car the quickest on the grid this year.
“Hopefully, after the summer break we’ll add some extra things to the car, but as does everybody, so it’s not going to be straightforward.
“We still believe we can probably fight for victories at some point this season. But I don’t think we’ll probably ever have the car that will be outright quickest.”
