Mattia Binotto has revealed that Charles Leclerc was aware of his power unit penalty prior to the Canadian Grand Prix.
Leclerc was forced to start the Canadian GP from P19 after exceeding the limit of the power unit components used this season. The Monegasque went on to finish the race in the top 5.
Binotto admitted that Leclerc had been prepared to start the race from the back of the grid.
“[It was] something we decided very soon after Baku,” the Ferrari team principal said.
“It’s something that he [Leclerc] was aware of [for] many days, so he had time to digest and be prepared for the race weekend.
“He was focusing [on] his race weekend, knowing that he would [start] from the back of the grid for the race. So even his Friday program, Saturday program was focused on the high-fuel runs, just to make sure that he was prepared for the race itself.”
