Mercedes’ George Russell admitted being shocked after qualifying 5th for tomorrow’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The British driver qualified behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, just over a second behind the polesitter Charles Leclerc. A result that looks promising for the team which has, perhaps, struggled the most through the start of the season.

“It’s shocking when you cross the line to see that you are 1 and a bit seconds behind pole position,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think the lap felt good, the car felt good.”

Russell also explained that Azerbaijan is showing both Mercedes’ strengths and weaknesses and that the team is working to improve their performance.

“This weekend has brought out the strengths and weaknesses of all of us. We expect so much from ourselves and we are working so hard to bring the performance to our car.”
