Juri Vips has been the quickest driver in Formula 2 qualifying at the Baku City Circuit.
The starting grids for this weekend’s Formula 2 races in Baku were formed on Friday afternoon.
All drivers went to the track at the start of the session for their first runs. Ayumu Iwasa was in the lead early on after setting a lap time almost seven-tenths quicker than Dennis Hauger’s, who was second. Later on, Hauger’s lap time was beaten by several drivers.
Ralph Boschung went off the track in sector 1, forcing yellow flags. He did not damage his car, but failed to complete a flying lap.
The majority of the field left the pit lane with over 11 minutes to go to have another attempt.
Misfortune struck Iwasa – the leader hit the wall and damaged his car severely. Qualifying was over for him and the session was red-flagged with less than 6 minutes left.
After Iwasa’s car was removed from the race track, the session was resumed.
Lap times were improving and the situation in the standings was constantly changing. Juri Vips went on to set the quickest lap time of the session and take the Feature Race pole position. Liam Lawson was second, while Hauger was in P3.
Jake Hughes finished the session 10th and took the Sprint Race pole position.
