AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly has praised Alpine for their “pretty scary” straight-line speed at the Baku Street Circuit.
The French driver was left stunned by Fernando Alonso’s fourth place in the second practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Gasly explained his team is losing three to four tenths to the Spaniard.
“I think we are in the mix and we are not alone,” Gasly said.
“I’m quite impressed with Alonso, I must say, and the straight-line speed [of the Alpine]. Out of the last corner, we are losing three or four tenths to him.
“I need to check if he had a tow because it was pretty scary!”
Gasly, however, said AlphaTauri is involved in the midfield fight, including with Alpine, despite Alonso’s impressive laptimes.
“We’re up there, Alonso is up there, Mercedes are up there and we know that [Lando] Norris, when it comes to qualifying, is always up there,” he added.
“I don’t want to get too excited because the Friday in Monaco was amazing and we know what happened then – but so far it’s been a good day.”
