Otmar Szafnauer has revealed that Alpine are going to make the decision regarding the second 2023 seat in July.
Esteban Ocon’s future at Alpine is secured as the Frenchman will stay in the team until at least 2024. However, it is unknown who will be his teammate after 2022.
Fernando Alonso’s contract is expiring this year and the Spaniard intends to stay in the sport. At the same time, Alpine have reigning Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri, who is currently their reserve driver and needs racing experience. Szafnauer has revealed Alpine’s approach to the matter.
“We haven’t thought that through yet, because it’s a little bit early. But around Silverstone we will probably be talking about it,” the Alpine team principal said.
Piastri was linked to move to Williams during this season amid Nicholas Latifi’s struggles. Szafnauer dismissed those reports, but admitted that he would be open to such offers, so that the Australian could get experience.
“I haven’t considered that deeply yet. I don’t know what’s happening at Williams, but I’ve heard the rumors.
“In the past, when McLaren have come to us and said, ‘Hey, can we use him [Piastri] as a reserve driver?’, we said yes.
“The reason for that is, the more seat time that he can get instead of sitting out, the better. So we would have that strategically in mind. But as far as what’s happening at Williams, I don’t know.”
