Otmar Szafnauer does not have concerns regarding Fernando Alonso’s mindset despite a difficult start to the season.
Alonso was 8th on track in Miami, but dropped down to 11th after two 5-second penalties. The Spaniard has had a difficult stretch as he scored 2 points so far and is 16th in the Drivers’ Championship.
Despite misfortunes in the opening races, Szafnauer is confident in Alonso’s motivation.
“I think he [Alonso] is absolutely fine. He’s still pushing for more, as Fernando does,” the Alpine team principal said.
“He should have started higher up again. I think he just missed out on Q3 by a little bit and we had the pace of a [Valtteri] Bottas or a [Lewis] Hamilton in qualifying.
“Once you start up there, it’s a different race, so we need to put it all together for Fernando, and Esteban [Ocon], for that matter.
“We will do that in the near future and we’ll score even more points.
“It has been frustrating, but there’ll be better times to come.
“The good thing is the package underneath him is performing, so the rest of the stuff we can work on it and get right.”
