Miami GP “a reality check” for McLaren

McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl thinks that McLaren’s performance at the Miami Grand Prix showed their real form.

After a difficult start to the season, McLaren made a recovery in the following races and finished on podium in Imola. However, the Woking-based squad struggled in Miami.

Only Lando Norris managed to get to Q3 on Saturday. On Sunday, neither driver managed to score points – Norris retired after a collision with Pierre Gasly, while Daniel Ricciardo finished the race 13th after a time penalty.

“We didn’t have the performance that we had at the previous two race weekends,” Seidl said about McLaren’s form in Miami.

“It was all a reality check also [in terms of] where we are. This performance was clearly more in line with what we have seen in Bahrain, or also in Jeddah.

“We knew, going into this race today, that there was only a chance to fight for, let’s say, a couple of points.

“Because [the] Mercedes cars [and Valtteri] Bottas [were] clearly quicker. But, unfortunately, we simply didn’t maximize everything [in the race].”
