Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has claimed pole position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, in what was a chaotic qualifying session.
What was supposed to be a 1-hour-long qualifying turned into almost two hours as rain complicated things on track, with multiple drivers suffering from incidents as conditions only worsened throughout the course of the session.
Verstappen took the Pole Position Award after Lando Norris crashed with less than a minute to go, bringing out the red flags. Speaking after the session, the Red Bull driver spoke about how it felt.
“It was tricky out there. Dry, rain… It was very slippery. [It was difficult] to also get tire temperatures to work,” he explained.
“It was [a] hectic, long qualifying. But, of course, in the end [I’m] very happy to be here. It’s an amazing track and it also really punishes you if you make a mistake, you can go into the wall.
“So, that’s what we like, to make it really hard and difficult. [I’m] very pleased with Pole Position. I know, of course, tomorrow and Sunday will be a bit different in terms of weather conditions, but at least it’s a good start to the weekend.
“Our first three races in general didn’t go to plan, but we’ll try to have a good weekend here,” he concluded.
