George Russell admitted that he did not expect to be 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship at the start of the season.
Despite Mercedes’ problems in the first races of 2022, Russell finished in the top 5 on each occasion and got on the podium in Australia. As a result, the Briton is 2nd in the Drivers’ Championship at the moment.
Russell reflected on Mercedes’ performance so far.
“[I’m] pleasantly surprised to be P2 in the championship,” he said.
“It’s credit to the team for giving us so far a very reliable car, and we’ve got to be there at the end to capitalize from these results – it’s definitely not based on pace.
“But I think it’s been a respectable start to the season in terms of how we’ve managed to optimize our lack of performance. I think every race we’ve done, we’ve truly maximized the result possible.
“I don’t think we could have achieved a higher result at any of the circuits as a team, and that is, I guess, a silver lining.”
