Fernando Alonso thinks that he was able to fight for the Australian Grand Prix pole position.

In his Q3 attempt, Alonso kept up with the pace of the leaders and had the quickest middle sector time. However, shortly after, he went off the track and hit the barrier at turn 11, which ended his day.

The Spaniard suspected that his car had had a hydraulic failure.

“We lost the hydraulics on the car so we lost the gear change and also the power steering and everything,” he said.

Alonso was disappointed with the outcome of qualifying.

“I think we could fight for pole position today. I’ve been waiting many years for that possibility.

“It’s amazing that we’ve been so unlucky in these first three races of the championship. I was doing, I think, probably one of the best weekends in years, and it is frustrating now.”
