Toto Wolff admits that it is “extremely painful” for Mercedes not be around the top of the pecking order.
Mercedes had a difficult start of the season as the Silver Arrows are still looking for a way to deal with porpoising. Though Mercedes are now 2nd in the Constructors’ Championship, they are 40 points away from Ferrari, and have a 1 point advantage over Red Bull Racing.
Wolff shared his thoughts about Mercedes’ current position in the pecking order.
“We had the luxury of being right in the middle of those fun games for the last eight years,” the Mercedes team principal said.
“Luxury is the wrong word… we were right in the middle of those fun games in the front and, talking as a Formula 1 stakeholder, benefitting from a great show that is really spectacular to look at.
“But, on the other side, [it] is extremely painful to be not part of those fun games – and by quite a chunk of lap time deficit.
“We’re not going to rest until we are back in the mix. But it’s no fun at all. [It’s an] exercise in humility and it’s gonna make us stronger, even though it’s not funny right now.”
