Pierre Gasly topped the timesheets of the first free practice session of the season.
The wait was finally over and the 2022 Formula 1 season officially kicked off with the FP1 at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The track got busy as soon as the pit lane exit was open as the drivers were still learning the new cars. It was especially relevant for Nico Hulkenberg, who was driving the new generation of F1 cars for the first time.
Esteban Ocon faced issues in the opening minutes of the session – a big amount of debris fell off the sidepod area of his car on the main straight. The session had to be red-flagged to remove the debris from the track surface.
Wind was expected to be a big factor during the race weekend. George Russell confirmed that as he told Mercedes that the car “felt very affected by the wind compared to last week.”
Valtteri Bottas had issues with misfiring at the start of the session, so he spent the whole practice in the garage.
The drivers had to deal with traffic while working on the track. There were several near misses at different sections of the race track.
Pierre Gasly set the fastest lap lap of FP1. The Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz followed him in the top 3.
