Argentinian Franco Colapinto is on pole position for the Formula 3 series in Bahrain.

Formula 3 came to the Bahrain International Circuit for the first time and as the season opener. The grid went out for qualifying at the start of the session but traffic made it difficult for those behind the front to find some space and were forced to do a second warm-up lap.

Under the new format, this 30-minute qualifying session set Sunday’s starting grid, while the top 12 are reversed for tomorrow’s Sprint race.

After a few back-and-forths at the front, it was ART Grand Prix’s Grégoire Saucy who set the first representative fastest lap of the session, with the only time into the 1:46s so far.

However, he was later beaten by MP Motorsports’ Alexander Smolyar. The neutral driver set the new fastest time of the session with 1:46.642s. However, the group of cars went out once again through the ending stages to try and improve their lap times, so it was not over.

In the end, it was Argentinian Franco Colapinto who took pole position.
