Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has topped the charts in today’s final day of pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit.
The Dutchman completed a lap around the circuit in 1:31.720s using the C5 tire compound, which placed him ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who using the C4 compound, lapped the circuit in 1:32.415.
No pre-season testing is official without the speculations and comments from the drivers about their performances. Today, Lewis Hamilton said he doesn’t believe his team, Mercedes, will be capable of winning races in their current shape.
“It’s a little bit too early to have those kind of thoughts, but, at the moment, I don’t think we’ll be competing for wins,” he said.
“But there is potential within our car to get us there. We’ve just got to learn to be able to extract it, and fix some of the problems, which is what we’re working on.”
The British driver lapped the Bahrain circuit today in 1:36.217, using the C5 compound and completing 78 laps. Don’t be surprised if the Silver Arrows are completely downplaying their real shape, though. For George Russell it was a different story – he placed fourth, with a 1:32.759s today.
Fernando Alonso with Alpine completed the top three of the day, using the C4 compound and completing 120 laps, the Spaniard lapped in 1:32.698s.
For McLaren things aren’t looking to go as they wished – Lando Norris, who is filling in for a Covid-19 positive Daniel Ricciardo, set the 9th fastest time of the day with the C2 compound.
