Williams F1 team principal Jost Capito says former boss Claire Williams ‘needs distance’ from the world of Formula 1.

The team was founded in 1978 by Sir Frank Williams, with Claire taking over the leadership in 2013. The team suffered in performance and financial terms and was acquired by Dorilton Capital in 2020, appointing Capito as the new team principal.

The separation of the Williams family from its F1 team was surely a heartbreak not only for them but for the community in general. Capito said he still keeps in contact with Williams, and that it was hard for her to step back from the sport.

“I think it was very hard for Claire to step back even though she knows it’s the right decision,” he said.

“I’m in contact with Claire, and I agreed with her that if she wants to know something, if she wants to be in touch, I’m always reachable, but I think she needs some distance.”

The German said Claire needs distance, especially now that her father and team founder Frank Williams passed away last November.

“We are on very good terms, and [I want to] give her the freedom she needs to have.

“Now, especially with Frank passing away, it’s even harder for her, and she needs some time for the family, but she knows she can contact me and visit me whenever she wants.”
