Toto Wolff assures that Mercedes has not asked the FIA to fire Michael Masi from the position of the race director.

Shortly after the 2021 Abu Dhabi GP, Mercedes protested the race results because of the alleged violation of the Safety Car procedure. The protest was dismissed, but Mercedes announced their intention to appeal the FIA’s decision.

However, on the appeal deadline, Mercedes announced that they would withdraw it. There were suggestions that Mercedes did not appeal the decision in exchange for the FIA removing Masi from his position.

During the Mercedes W13 car launch event, Wolff denied those claims.

“Us dropping the appeal linked to anyone leaving the FIA is not true. I don’t know where that comes [from],” the Mercedes team principal said.

“I think that the restructuring with how decisions are being made in Formula 1, sporting decisions, has been made, and also technical decisions were necessary.

“Last year was a great season, but it created a lot of polarisation with decisions that were not always easy to understand.”
