Mercedes has officially presented their 2022 Formula 1 challenger, the W13, during an online event on Friday.
The reigning constructors’ champion is the latest team that has shown their new car. Mercedes decided to switch back to the traditional colors after having a dark-colored car for 2 years.
The team principal Toto Wolff commented on the changes in livery: “The black livery was a clear intent and a clear demonstration of our mission to become a more diverse and inclusive team.
“It has become part of our DNA, but the silver color of the Silver Arrows is as much our DNA, it’s our history. As a team, we have grown from the Silver Arrows to slowly becoming a more diverse and inclusive team and therefore our colors going forward will be silver and black.”
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton also shared their thoughts about the new car.
“It feels incredible. Obviously, both Lewis and I have driven so many laps on the simulator. We’ve seen all the drawings, we’ve had so many meetings and presentations about it. But suddenly seeing all this come together, seeing all of the men and women who have put so much hard work and grit into making this and coming together here, I think it looks incredible,” Russell said during the W13 launch event.
“We’ve had an incredible livery with the black over the past couple of years, but with the silver back on track it is going to look incredible.”
“With this new era of cars, we’ve never seen such a drastic change. It’s such a huge change in so many ways,” Hamilton added.
It’s been really interesting to see the designers and everyone coming together to find the best ways of creating a masterpiece. And we have no idea how it’s going to handle.”
