Kevin Benavides has spoken about his performance in stage 8 of the 2022 Dakar Rally where he finished 13th.
After a successful stage on Sunday, the KTM rider had problems on Monday and lost 15 minutes to the stage winner Sam Sunderland. As a result, Benavides dropped down to P6 in the overall standings. After the finish, he revealed that he had a fuel pump issue.
“It was a really good day for me. I pushed a lot. Also, Nacho Cornejo did a really good job. I had a problem with my fuel pump, so I had to pass the fuel from the front to the rear. I had to stop two times, so I lost, like, eight minutes more or less,” Benavides said.
“Afterward, the guys in front made a mistake with the navigation, so I caught up with them here at the end, so we pushed together until the last kilometers.”
Despite an almost 15-minute gap to Sunderland in the overall standings, the Argentine believes that he is still in contention for the back-to-back Dakar victory.
“It was hard work to recover the time lost and to continue pushing, everything is about motivation and attitude. I think it’s good to have the confidence that everything can happen.
I will try to continue this way. I think this stage was really good. I am pushing every day. My strategy now is to try and be fast but also very careful with navigation. Everything is possible in the rally, everything can happen, so I still believe.”
