Giniel de Villiers has been given a time penalty after a collision with a bike rider Cesar Zumaran during stage 1A of the 2022 Dakar Rally.
The Toyota Gazoo Racing driver was involved in two big incidents that surely were unsportsmanlike. During the stage, de Villiers had a collision with Zumaran on a slow section. The South African failed to avoid the rider who was standing still.
De Villiers kept going after the incident. During a meeting with the stewards, he stated that he had not stopped because he did not want to get stuck in the sand and got a sign from Zumaran that in de Villiers’ opinion meant that he was fine. In the end, the South African was given a five-minute penalty.
However, it was not the end of the story. De Villiers allegedly had another incident with a bike rider during stage 2. It was reported that he had apparently run over a bike at a dune. De Villiers did not stop after the accident as well. The case is now investigated by the FIA stewards.
