Daniel Sanders has reflected on a successful stage 1B of the 2022 Dakar Rally for him and emphasized the importance of navigation.
Sanders had a perfect start to the Dakar Rally. After his victory in stage 1A, the Australian went to on win stage 1B as well, leading at every waypoint. Despite a dominant performance, Sanders was concerned about navigation.
“Really difficult navigation, we had a lot of rain last night and that made it hard to find the right tracks. In the end, a lot of guys got lost and, luckily, we got onto the right track. It was a good, strong finish. I just didn’t push too much at the start, just gave it a nice rhythm, and at the end, I tried to open as much as I could,” the GasGas Factory Racing rider said.
“I think I’ll just back it down to 80-70% tomorrow just to put the roadbook first because you can lose a lot of time like people did today.
“At the refuelling, you could gauge off the time at front with the guys and it was really good to keep pushing. Once I knew there were no tracks at front, it was important to keep pushing and make as much time as possible because this is what I’m gonna have to face tomorrow.
“I have to full-focus on this road book and put my life on it, so it’s gonna be a really important day for me tomorrow.”
