Sunday saw the first real stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally, with Kancius, Sotnikov, and Domzala taking stage wins in the quads, trucks, and SSVs.

Seth Quintero won in the LW prototypes class. The results promise an exciting rally to the very end.

Laisvydas Kancius took the win in the quads and thus got the overall lead in the quads at the Dakar Rally. He now leads the race ahead of Pablo Copetti and Giovanni Enrico. Copetti led until km 239, but lost too much time in the final split times and finished the first real stage in 2nd place. Manuel Andujar, the winner of the prologue yesterday, was only 10th.

In the SSVs class, there was an exciting second half of the stage. At first, it looked like a safe race for Michal Goczal. The Pole finished the prologue yesterday behind his brother Marek Goczal in P2. Therefore, there was actually the ideal starting position for the brothers in today’s stage. Michal led until the half and then lost some ground and finished only 5th. His brother and polesitter Marek had a bad day and finished the stage on P11.

The stage victory went to Aron Domzala, who was P2 behind Michal Goczal in the first half. He won by 2 minutes ahead of Austin Jones, and Rodrigo Luppi de Oliviera finished the stage in P3.

In the LW prototypes class, there was a close head-to-head race between Seth Quintero and Francisco Lopez Contardo. In the end, Quintero prevailed. Sebastian Eriksson was third with a bigger gap to the top two. The first real stage was disappointing for Cristina Gutierrez Herrero, who finished 5th by a big margin.

In the trucks, there was a small surprise at the beginning of the Dakar Rally. Many believed in a victory of the Kamaz team and it happened thanks to Dmitry Sotnikov and his crew. They won with a lead of more than half a minute ahead of Eduard Nikolaev. There was a surprise in the 3rd place though. Ales Loprais got to the top 3 ahead of the other two Kamaz trucks. However, the Czechs already have a considerable gap of almost 10 minutes to the first place.
