The Dakar Rally organizer is increasing security after a car explosion incident in Jeddah that caused injuries for one of the participants.

The 2022 Dakar Rally has just started, but it already has a controversial story. Amaury Sport Organization released a statement that mentioned “an incident that occured this morning outside the Hotel Donatello, which resulted in the injury of one driver.”

Later on, the statement was updated and it was confirmed that a car with six passengers had exploded, and one person was injured as a result.

“Only the driver of the car suffered serious injuries to his leg and had to undergo surgery. His condition is improving and his repatriation to France is being prepared. His vehicle was brought to a sudden halt by a sudden explosion, the origin of which is still unknown at this stage.”

The Dakar race director David Castera confirmed that a buggy driver Philippe Boutron was injured in the incident.

“A Team Sodicars support vehicle, on leaving the hotel, was suddenly immobilized, probably by an explosion, and the vehicle caught fire. There were six people on board, among them an injured person, Philippe Boutron, who has a very serious leg injury. He underwent surgery today, he is better and he should return to France in the next few days. We are obviously thinking about him at the moment,” Castera told French 4.

After the incident, ASO announced that they would take measures and investigate what had happened with the local police.
