A sneak peek of what to expect at the 2022 edition of the Dakar Rally that is about to start in Saudi Arabia.

The new year coming is always a great time in the world of motorsports. The reason for this is that a new year always starts with one of the biggest events in the world – the Dakar Rally.

The 2022 Dakar Rally will take place on January 2nd – 14th in Saudi Arabia, the venue of the two latest events. As usual, the rally will consist of a prologue and 12 stages around the Saudi Arabian desert. The competitors will cover a distance of 8375 kilometers, 4258 of which are the special stage. The rally will in fact start on January 1st with the prologue from Jeddah to Ha’il. The final stage will take place on January 14th as the competitors will drive from Bisha to Jeddah.

As of November 26th, the total amount of 578 crews is set to take part in the rally across 8 categories (bikes, quads, cars, LWVs, SSVs, trucks, classic cars, and classic trucks).

The cars category will be the one to watch during the 2022 Dakar Rally. As the event gradually moves towards the environmentally friendly direction, a new class has been added to the category – T1-E, which consists of vehicles with electric engines or that use sustainable fuels. Audi will enter the class with the RS Q e-tron car. Carlos Sainz, Mattias Ekstrom, and the reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel will drive those cars at Phoenix Racing. They will have to battle with the likes of Nasser Al-Attiyah, Nani Roma, Sebastien Loeb, and many others.

The 2021 bikes champion Kevin Benavides will have a new challenge. After the triumph with Honda, he switched to KTM and would try to become a back-to-back champion. The bikes field is full of skilled and experienced riders, including Ricky Brabec, Sam Sunderland, Daniel Sanders, Skyler Howes Xavier De Soultrait, Toby Price, Matthias Walkner, Joan Barreda Bort. A former MotoGP rider Danilo Petrucci will make his Dakar debut with KTM.

In quads, Manuel Andujar is set to defend his title from Giovanni Enrico, Pablo Copetti, Alexandre Giroud, Kamil Wisniewski, Tomas Kubiena, Italo Pedemonte.

Francisco Lopez Contardo, Josef Machacek, Cristina Gutierrez, and Seth Quintero will compete in the LWVs category, while Austin Jones, Aron Domzala, and Michal Goczal, Molly Taylor, Sergey Kariakin, and others will battle for the SSVs title.

Kamaz surely want to continue their dominance in the trucks category. Eduard Nikolaev, Andrey Karginov, Anton Shibalov, and the 2021 champion Dmitry Sotnikov are all the favorites for the victory. However, Martin Macik, Ales Loprais, Martin Van Den Brink, and Ignacio Casale will give them a fight.
