The 2021 world champion Max Verstappen has confirmed that he will have number 1 on his Red Bull car in the upcoming Formula 1 season.

After the new driver number rule was introduced in F1 in 2014, only defending champions were allowed to use number 1. However, Sebastian Vettel was the only driver to have it as Lewis Hamilton refused to change his number and Nico Rosberg retired several days after winning the title in 2016.

Number 1 will make its comeback to F1 as Verstappen has confirmed that he is going to make the switch.

“Yeah, I will run it [number 1],” the Dutchman said. “How many times can you do that? I don’t know, maybe it’s the only time I can in my life.

“I think it’s the best number out there. I will definitely put it on the car.”
